Medical Community Embraces Same-Sex Marriage
GLMA Releases New Report on LGBT Health and Marriage
By Herndon Davis

Utilizing a wealth of scientific research in support of same-sex marriage the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, GLMA has launched its Marriage Equality Initiative, an aggressive multi-media educational campaign which validates the mental and physical benefits of marriage for gay and lesbian couples.

According to its newly published report, “Same-Sex Marriage and Health” GLMA along with five other medical associations have concurred that there is a positive correlation between same-sex marriage and the longevity of health and recovery from illness of LGBT patients along with added health protections for their children and for elderly LGBT.

This fact is a crucial element to be added to the overall dynamics of same-sex marriage especially as California voters head to the polls on November 4 to decide whether to ban same-sex marriage or not. Throughout the entire summer and into the fall, opinion polls have fluctuated on the issue in the state. And almost every possible angle has been studied and openly discussed concerning the issue of same-sex marriage.

Today we must focus more upon the mental and physical health aspects of same-sex marriage. We must focus on the fact that healthcare coverage is often transferred between married individuals and to their children.  And we must also remember that the recovery from an illness or accident is also a family issue and that the recognition of marriage between two people of the same-sex would greatly benefit the entire LGBT community.

Same-sex marriage would bring a much needed validation to LGBT patients and their children within healthcare. The opportunity to be open and honest about one’s relationships in times of healthcare challenges is yet another benefit of same-sex marriage.

We must remember that the road to marriage equality is a multi-dimensional path and that healthcare issues must be taken into serious consideration going forward in other states across the nation.  Our health as LGBT depends upon it!!
