Announcing Straight Down the Middle

Sociologist writes funny, poignant novel exploring what happens when two lesbians have a baby fathered by their neighbor and their mutual expectations – and needs – change in surprising ways

“A fresh take on the battle of the sexes. A smart, modern comedy with a deep heart.”

~ Frank Baldwin, author of Mimi and Jake and Balling the Jack

Kelso Books and author and sociologist Margaret Davis have just released Straight Down the Middle, in which two long-time lesbians decide they want to have a baby. Set in San Francisco in the mid-1980s at a time when it was rare for lesbians and gays to become biological parents, Davis tells the story of Diane, who wants to become a mother. When her long-time lover Cindy agrees, they ask their burly neighbor Sam to father Diane’s child.

This seemingly straightforward arrangement becomes complicated after the baby is born. Before she knows it, Diane finds herself stuck in the middle, caught between Sam who wants to maintain contact with his son and Cindy who wants him completely and utterly gone. “Diane’s attempts to keep the peace,” comments Davis, “lead to lies, intrigues, and cover-ups galore – until finally she is forced by circumstances to ‘get out of the middle’ and search out her own needs and desires.”

Straight Down the Middle is told in the first person by Diane, with the result that readers are immediately caught up in the memorable yearnings of a woman who becomes uncertain of her own sexual identity while trying to do her best for her child.

Straight Down the Middle is available at www.amazon.com and will shortly be available as a Kindle download.
